A Bit About Me

Nancy Marshall is the award-winning author of both a children’s book (A RATTLER’S TALE, 2021, children’s fiction, NFPW, 2022) and an adult historical novel set in Arizona in 2010 (A DRY HATE, 2023, 1st place fiction, NFPW, 2024).

Marshall was born in New York, graduated from Smith College (MA) and obtained a Masters in Teaching from Wesleyan (CT) and her law degree from Rutgers University (Newark, NJ). She spent several years teaching high school history and political science and also served as field officer with the New York State Division of Civil Rights.

Upon completing her JD at Rutgers University (Newark, NJ), Marshall moved to Arizona where she served for almost five years as Executive Director of the Arizona Civil Liberties Union. She has long had an abiding concern for fairness and justice, both for humans and for our wild brethren in the National Forests.

Marshall has witnessed several political abuses of power throughout her career, from both the Democratic side and the Republican side.

Marshall personally witnessed the ongoing harassment, arrest, detention and prosecution of Latinos, activists and political opponents by Sheriff Joe Arpaio during the time frame in A DRY HATE. Thus, she felt compelled to write a novel about the times, inspired by real history and fictionalized to give a sense of what the times were like for so many who lived through that era.

Meanwhile, Nancy has enjoyed spending time in Arizona’s national forests (A RATTLER’S TALE), finding things we can all like (A BOOK OF PRO-s), and volunteering in a community garden in South Phoenix (FINDING ZACHARIAH in a Community Garden). She writes with an eye to important nuggets of truth such as resisting abuse of power; stewardship of our wild places and animals; and the reconciliation and healing that can come through working together in community gardens.
