A Bit About Me

As a kid, author and illustrator Meaghan Cavanaugh, filled notebooks with funny imaginative stories – then took a decades long hiatus from writing, (as one does.) It wasn’t until much later that the writing itch returned, and this time, it wasn’t taking no for an answer.

Her debut children’s book, Critters Aren’t for Cuddles, blends storytelling with her love for nature and wildlife. She has more books in the works – some playful, some heartfelt – touching on themes like belonging, finding your passion, and learning to respect the world around us.

Meaghan is also an avid dog lover and foster. In fact, Smudge Mark Publishing is named in honor of her soul dog, Smudge (pictured above), and the logo is inspired by Smudge’s unique markings and mischievous ears. Meaghan hopes to share her experiences in future books that celebrate second chances, the human – animal bond, and the beautiful chaos of life with dogs.

Originally from New Mexico, she now lives in Arizona, where the desert is both inspiration and playground. When she’s not writing or wrangling her dogs, she’s likely outside, sketching out new ideas, or gently reminding people not to pick up wild critters.

Her goal is simple: to create stories that are fun, thoughtful, and just wild enough to stick with readers long after the last page.
