What a wonderful life! From chemistry teaching and research to teaching literature to studying theology to writing fiction. Mixed in, there were and are church workshops and committees. And, of course, a wonderful wife, amazing daughters and sons-in-law, and talented grandchildren. Granddaughter Amelia is my cover designer.
The road has gone from a childhood in Massachusetts and Maine to The University of New Hampshire (B.S.) to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Ph.D.) to University of Toledo (Professor Emeritus), including one year as Visiting Professor at Michigan State University, to Trinity University in San Antonio TX (Faculty Without Rank) to the Arizona desert. Yes, from beginning to end the move is west and there is quite a temperature difference between the beginning and the present.
My chemistry teaching ranged from a preparatory course and a course for nonscience majors to inorganic courses at the advanced and doctoral level. At Trinity University, I also taught First Year Seminar a number of times. Four times the topic used mystery novels as a vehicle for important topics and three times used Harry Potter. The topics using mystery novels were 1. Science; 2. Religion; 3. Eccentrics and Misfits. The Harry Potter seminars considered the writing of the novel in the first half and the moral issues raised in the second half.
I have been active in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at the local level in the churches where I was a member and mid-council levels in Mission Presbytery, Presbytery of the Grand Canyon and on the Presbyteries’ Cooperative Committee on Examinations for Candidates.

This ecumenical Christian book focuses on three aspects of God. What is God like? What are God's methods? and What should be our reaction? The modes of action are approached in a dual fashion: as a lay Christian theologian and, where appropriate, as a scientist.
Scientists and nonscientists alike make use of some of the same ways of describing everyday occurrences. This book shows the connections between our everyday occurrences and the scientists' organized patterns, giving enhanced understanding.
An extensive study guide assists those looking at the issues critically, either as an individual or in a classroom setting.

Why would Christians today want to take a close look at the Confession of 1967 put forth by the Presbyterian Church? The answer to that may be that Christians today need to look. There have been parallel advances in sciences in the 1960s and the 2010s. There has been critical examination of theology in each decade. And there have been substantive changes in society. All three of these upheavals shout out the need for reconciliation in the church then and especially now.
Reconciliation within the church is essential. Reconciliation between the people of the church and God is essential. Those were the goals of the Confession and remain goals today.
Reconciliation - that's what the Confession of 1967 is about. The meditations in this book use the education method of critical reflection for the reader to examine one's beliefs and to test their validity. The meditations provide guidance to look beyond the superficial reflection from the mirror and gain new insights into one's paradigm.

Here is a potpourri of short mysteries for readers’ enjoyment. The episodes will, at times, bring a chuckle and, at other times, tug at your heart strings. The characters act like real people who find adventure in the quirks that life brings them.
In four different venues, the amateur detectives range from twelve-year old twins to college students to a professional wrestler turned professor to a church pastor. Of course, there is murder, embezzlement, kidnapping, attacks, and forgiveness. You’ll love Kay and Emily, you’ll worry about the twins, Noah will be frustrating, and love is in the air. Melinda and the Rector demonstrate true concern and compassion in the midst of serious trouble.
The author is a retired chemistry professor so Cindy is an exceptional logical chemistry major with insight and compassion. Did Cindy blow up the chemistry lab? You will have to solve that mystery.

Here’s another 16 stories in groups of four with amateur detectives from middle school to seniors – senior citizens, that is. Yes, there are four murders, petty thefts, arguments, maybe visitors from outer space and more. Don’t overlook the two episodes based on true happenings involving the author.
These mysteries are interesting with characters who may tug at your heart strings. There are times you will be reintroduced to people from the first book (A Nice Trip) and will see how they are moving on with their lives. Of course, there are chemistry students showing they have interests other than science and who worry about getting their research done and about expressing their affection for each other.
Hold your ears. There’s shouting in many of the stories. And get out your musical instrument or find a piano and sing along with the Matchmaker.

A serial killer is on the loose with an attack every Saturday morning. A scroll is left at each crime scene with “Three Deadly Sins – No Four”, a quote from the Biblical book of Amos. There’s blunt trauma, fire, poison, and attempted drowning. Detective Paul Carter and his assistant Sgt. Mel Ouelette are unable to find any connections relating the attacks.
Meanwhile, life goes on in the Carter family with the at-large criminal always in their minds. Cousin Jake consults a psychic. Sgt. Mel finds coincidences on the web. A long list of suspects includes pastors, petty criminals, school personnel, and others with tenuous connections to the victims. To keep their sanity, the Carter family enjoys telling stories of their everyday escapades. There are separation worries brought on by divorce and by choice of college by graduating seniors.
Mary Carter and her Aunt Martha work on art projects, but they can’t get away from discussing the crimes. All-in-all, you’ll love the Carter family and wonder at the effect the crimes have on their lives.
Detective Paul and his brother Bib try making lists, but it is 8th-grader Mary who uses her word skills (she’s a great Boggle player) to help set a trap.

The Carter Family are having a busy but relaxed summer. That is, until Detective Mel Ouelette and her assistant Brian Bryant come to them with interesting episodes occurring in Milltown. These happenings are remindful of Three Deadly Sins – No Four in that a note is left at each crime scene. The notes suggest a connection with the zoo, specifically with the lions.
Mary Carter recognizes the quotations on the notes as being from the biblical book of Daniel. Using that information, she is able to predict what comes next so that Mel and Brian can be prepared. There are numerous suspects as the perpetrator of the crimes, all with either the necessary abilities or the obvious connections.
You will find interesting characters, imaginative episodes, and will love meeting the Miss Marple type detective Mary Carter, again.

Does a book with a title Poems, Psalms, and Ponderings have a theme? Yes. There are two themes that pervade the book. One is feelings. Poems and psalms convey feelings and leave room for ponderings as those feelings become real and personal. Many of the ponderings can do the same and bring back memories, like my grandmother singing.
Then there is fun. Limericks are a good example, which is where the book begins. The memories may be reminders of good times. Other ponderings may, on the surface, be only “I didn’t know that.” Maybe “knowing that” is needed; wouldn’t you like to know what is in your food? Speaking of food, you’ll find a trick on how to get your kid to eat broccoli.
This is a book to enjoy on many levels. It is not a hodgepodge. Each entry is carefully chosen to give opportunities for growing, remembering, and taking time to ponder.

Amateur detective Mary Carter is back. A year older and still interested in crimes but with her friends Debra and Sam. A Milltown family, the Blakes, comes front and center in the story with their magical abilities and their riches. Twins, Winston and Margaret, are separated by the murder of Winston with no obvious criminal suspected. The guardian angel for some of the Blakes appears in the form of a white cat self-named Sasha. Mary still writes stories that have changed in character.
Mel Ouelette and Brian Bryant, police detectives, seem to search high and low. They find Billy who likes to spend time in jail, Marvin who gets himself in trouble, city residents who try but don't have a clue, Robert's sister Quincy who seems to know something but isn't talking.
Margaret accuses the detectives of not trying hard. They say to look outside the box when inside the box has been neglected. Margaret enlists Mary and they realize what the box is.
Mary comes to the rescue, finding clues in the crossword puzzle they find. Putting clues together, Mary personally leads the detectives to the murderer. A little magic and help from Sasha save the day.

A Kindle version is available with a different solution. The title is Murder, Magic and a Cat. Kindle does not publish crossword puzzles.
